Hockey star gets golf help from PST

Darcy Rota - golf injury helped by PSTDarcy Rota, popular sports broadcaster and former hockey pro with several top NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, had a problem. Like most hockey players, he left the game with his share of injuries. Years of being banged around on the ice takes its toll in Darcy's case an injured back that kept getting in the way of his new sport, golf. The more golf he played, the more difficult it became to play well. For a man with a highly competitive approach to sports, anything less than his best was unacceptable.

Then, through an acquaintance, Rota heard about PST and decided to investigate whether it might help his back. An evaluation by the Vancouver Centre affirmed that he was a good candidate for the treatment and would likely respond well to it. Although he was skeptical at first he decided to give it a try. Today he's glad he did.

His response was typical of many who undergo the treatment. He felt some relief during the treatment, which was encouraging, but he understood the healing process would take at least six to eight weeks to reach its maximum potential. One month post-treatment he reported in an article on PST for Pacific Golf Magazine that he continues to improve. Today he is back to golf and able to play without pain for the first time in a long while. Was it worth it? "I'm very happy with the results. This treatment has definitely helped my back." And his golf game, we might add.

Former PST patient runs into record books

Olympian Debbie Ferguson had PST treatments for her hip injuryAlthough everyone may not be familiar with her name, Debbie Ferguson of the University of Georgia is very well known in the world of women's track and field. She is perhaps best known as a member of the 400-meter relay team from the Bahamas that won the silver medal in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

For the last three years, though, she has been handicapped by a serious hip injury that kept her from performing at her best. In 1997 she was unable to run without pain, and she was forced to stop running altogether. Her promising career as a runner was uncertain, at best.

She tried a variety of treatments, including physical therapy, none of which seemed to do much good. Then in 1987 Debbie went to the PST centre in the Bahamas, her home. Since receiving the treatment, she has been able to get back to running and regain her competitive edge.

In 1998 Debbie has come roaring back. Recently she took first place in both the 100 and 200-meter events at the NCAA Championships in Buffalo, something few other runners have been able to accomplish. The last University of Georgia runner to double was the legendary Olympian Gwen Torrence, so Debbie is certainly in elite company. Our congratulations go out to Debbie on her wins, and we're glad we could help.

PST research a hot international topic

Pulsed Signal Therapy meeting in FranceIn an exciting development on the research front, organizers of two prestigious international medical societies have invited a prominent PST researcher to make presentations at their annual meetings. Dr. Serge Perrot, principal investigator for a recent PST study done in France, has been asked to present his latest research findings to the American College of Rheumatology at its annual meeting this November in San Diego. Also in November he will speak in Paris before the Societe Francais de Rheumatologie, one of Europe's most important medical organizations.

Physicians and researchers attending the meetings will learn that patients in the French study, like those in previous studies in Germany, Canada, and the United States, showed significant improvement following PST, both immediately following treatment and after three months. The randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind study was done in collaboration with Dr. C.J. Menkes at Cochin Hospital, a University teaching hospital in Paris.

The original clinical trials at Yale found PST to be effective in 70-80% of cases. Results from the French study confirm the Yale findings: PST provides significant relief of pain and increases mobility.

Worldwide explosion of PST centres continues

Dozens of new PST centres are being established around the world each month as interest in Pulsed Signal Therapy grows. Germany, for example, recently added its 150th centre, just four years after PST's introduction there.

Construction is now under way on a new Certified PST Centre in Mexico City. Scheduled to open October 1st, it will mark two firsts for Mexico. It will be the first PST center to open in the interior of the country, and it will be the first of four new centres opening in Mexico City in the next year.

"We are excited about bringing PST here," says Dr. Ismael Levin, a well-known specialist in Sports Medicine in Mexico City and Medical Director for the centre.

"In my practice I treat patients with acute joint injuries and patients with chronic degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis. This technology makes it possible to provide pain relief without strong drugs and helps avoid the need for surgery. Many of our patients don't like the idea of surgery and are looking for an alternative. PST is the alternative that can help them."

Meet the staff

Pat Phillips

Pat Phillips, Vancouver Pulsed Signal Therapy CentrePat Phillips has been with the Vancouver PST Centre from the very beginning and has had a hand in treating almost all of the patients who have come to the center. She received her training as a registered nurse in the U.K. and held head nurse positions there for eight years before coming to BC. Since coming here in 1977, she obtained her BC registration and has worked as a registered nurse in hospitals, clinics, and in doctors" offices. Pat serves as a master trainer with Certified and has trained PST staff in Canada and Mexico.

"I have always gotten a great deal of satisfaction caring for other people. That's why I became a nurse," says Pat. "What makes this treatment so special is that I am able to watch people in severe pain get better and do the things they used to do. It's very gratifying to have a part in that process."
